Treasures from Chatsworth: Commissioning artwork

See video

Chatsworth in Derbyshire is filled with intriguing artworks from oils by Lucian Freud to statuary by Antonio Canova. Many have been specially commissioned by the Dukes of Devonshire themselves.

In the second of Huntsman's short films for Sotheby's, which take you inside the corridors of Chatsworth and up close to the world famous artworks, discover how the unusual ceramic DNA portrait of the Cavendish family by Jacob van der Beugel came about. A 'contemporary way of dealing with ancestry and inheritance' (according to the artist), its 660 ceramic panels and 6,000-odd handmade ceramic blocks are the result of a commission in which van der Beugel was given free rein to interpret the space and the place of his own work within the collections.

A masterclass in the relationship between artist and patron, find out how it reflects a much older commission within the house.

Look out for new episodes on H&A TV each week.
