The bookshelf: Style Me Vintage - Home

Vintage blogger Sarah-Jane Hosegood reviews a new offering on vintage decor

I have friends who have not yet been bitten by the vintage bug, and, at times, I think they must wonder what it is that fascinates me about it. I have watched the vintage boom unfold, which has brought about a deeper appreciation for the past and all it has to offer.

If you are considering exploring what the fuss is about or would like to introduce a friend to the world of vintage interiors, then I can recommend Style Me Vintage - Home by vintage dealer Keeley Harris. While it's not one for those who prefer antiques in their strictly-defined sense, if you are looking for some retro inspiration Keeley's book is a good place to start.

A friendly introduction full of helpful buying advice has ideas for managing your wish list and tips for where and how to buy. This is followed by a practical home style and fashions chapter that explains the different genres on offer, while a vintage shops directory lists all the important information to help you on your buying quest.

A visual treasure trove of bygone style guides the reader through the decades from the 1920s to the 1970s, with an introduction in Keeley’s warm, informal style giving the reader a feel for the times. Each chapter includes main design influences, details, style tips and how to get the look room by room, along with inspiring images. Key themes, lists of what to look for and the main designers of the decade all help to conjure up the scene.

While the images are a glimpse back in time to how each room would have looked, Keeley doesn't prescribe hard and fast rules. You can choose pieces from your favourite era or mix it up with several different styles to suit your budget and tastes. And that, of course is the beauty of buying into vintage. You can buy what you fancy – perhaps something that jolts a fond memory or just obtain excellent quality furnishings for less than you would expect. All of this with the added benefit of being eco-friendly at the same time.

Style Me Vintage - Home by Keeley Harris is out now (Pavilion Books, £14.99)
